Hyūma is a young boy who has received special training from his father, Ittetsu Hoshi, who was called the "phantom of the 3rd base." One day, this young man meets Mitsuru Hanagata from a baseball team of juvenile delinquents called the Black Shadows. Hyūma scores a splendid victory as he discovers a weakness in Hanagata's knockout batting style from his intensive training sessions with Ittetsu. He vows to be Hanagata's lifelong rival.
